CHROMIUM BASED REAGENTS -Chromic acid (H2CrO4)

Chromium based reagents
 Chromic acid (H2CrO4)

Commonly used for oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols that do not contain acid sensitive group.


Appearance: dark red crystals

Preparation: often prepared “in situ”



Examples:

Mechanism:

Limitations:

  High toxicity.
 Saturated primary alcohols are oxidized to carboxylic acid.
